The Right to Asylum

The Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility is pleased to host a series of events in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. The events will focus on the Article 14 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights: "Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution'.


The day will feature a panel on the current situation regarding asylum seekers and migrants and the future of the asylum system, followed by a film screening. The evening will conclude with an address and Q&A session with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.


These event will be held in person. The panel and keynote address will have with a livestreaming component. Those unable to attend in person will receive instructions on how to connect to the livestream closer to the event date.

Presented by the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility, the New University in Exile Consortium, and The New School for Social Research.

Health & Safety Information

Event guests and visitors must provide proof of up-to-date vaccination, including a booster when eligible. The following protocols will be in place to ensure a safe and healthy experience for everyone:


Masks must be worn in concert and lecture venues where events are held. Masks are encouraged and optional elsewhere indoors.


The New School has partnered with CLEAR to utilize Health Pass, an online tool that safely and simply verifies proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Specific questions about using the CLEAR Health Pass to attend an on-campus event can be directed to the event organizer.


To ensure expedited event check-in, event guests should set up a CLEAR Health Pass account with proof of vaccination prior to the event.

Health & Safety Information

Effective February 23, 2023, event guests and/or visitors to the New School are no longer required to provide proof of up-to-date vaccination or negative result from a PCR test and do not need to use the CLEAR app to present their vaccination status. 


Wearing a mask is recommended but not required on campus.

Volker Türk

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

Mr. Türk is the current United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. He took up his official functions as High Commissioner on 17 October 2022.


He has devoted his long and distinguished career to advancing universal human rights, notably the international protection of some of the world's most vulnerable people - refugees and stateless persons.

Prior to this, Mr. Türk was the Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General where he coordinated global policy work. He also ensured UN system-wide coordination in the follow-up to the Secretary-General’s “Call to Action for Human Rights” and his report, Our Common Agenda, which sets out a vision to tackle the world’s interconnected challenges on foundations of trust, solidarity and human rights. He previously served as Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Coordination in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (2019-2021).

T. Alexander Aleinikoff

Dean, The New School for Social Research

Director, Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility

Alex Aleinikoff is Dean of The New School for Social Research and University Professor at The New School. He has served as Director of the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility since January 2017.


Alex has written widely in the areas of immigration and refugee law and policy, transnational law, citizenship, race, and constitutional law. His latest book, New Narratives on the Peopling of America (co-edited with Alexandra Delano), will be published by the Johns Hopkins University Press in 2024. He is also the author of The Arc of Protection: Reforming the International Refugee Regime (Stanford University Press, 2019, co-authored by Leah Zamore) and Semblances of Sovereignty: The Constitution, the State, and American Citizenship ( Harvard University Press, 2002). He is a co-author of leading legal casebooks on immigration law and forced migration. He is currently working on several projects relating to climate migration and reform of the international protection regime.


Before coming to The New School, Alex was United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees from 2010-2015. He was Dean, Executive Vice President for Law Center Affairs, and a faculty member at Georgetown University Law Center, and was a faculty member at the University of Michigan Law School. He served as Co-chair of the Immigration Task Force for President Barack Obama’s transition team in 2008. From 1994 to 1997, he served as the general counsel, and then Executive Associate Commissioner for Programs, at the Immigration and Naturalization Service.


Alex received a JD from Yale Law School and a BA and honorary Doctorate of Laws from Swarthmore College. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014.

Kamal Amakrane

Managing Director

United Nations Global Centre for Climate Mobility

Kamal currently leads the Global Centre for Climate Mobility, advancing various regional climate mobility initiatives enabled by the UN, the World Bank and respective regional organizations, including in Africa, the Greater Caribbean region, and the Middle East.


He also spearheads the Rising Nations Initiative, a UN Member States-led effort focused on protecting the statehood, sovereignty & heritage of Pacific atoll island countries facing existential threat from rising sea level.


Between 2018 and 2020, he also served as Special Advisor for Strategic Partnerships, supporting United Nations’ efforts to advance innovation technology towards achieving the SDGs. He spearheaded efforts leading to the establishment of the UN Innovation & Technology Accelerator for Cities.


From 2015 to 2017, Kamal served as Political Director to successive Presidents of the UN General Assembly, where he led the Office’s instrumental contribution on migration and human rights issues, including the negotiation and adoption the New York Declaration for Refugees & Migrants, the Global Compact for Migration and the Political Declaration on Combating Trafficking in Persons.

Raza Husain

Member, Matrix CHambers

Raza specialises in public law, with an emphasis on immigration and human rights. Raza was appointed silk in 2010, and nominated in 2013 year as Human Rights Silk of the Year, having previously been awarded Human Rights and Public Law Junior of the Year by Chambers Bar Awards in 2007.  In 2013 Raza was listed among the top 100 silks practising in all fields at the UK bar.


Raza has appeared in over 30 cases in the Supreme Court or House of Lords. In the last 14, he has appeared as leading advocate, on each occasion successfully save once. Raza has a significant international practice.  He regularly appears before the Court of Justice in Luxembourg and the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.  He regularly advises and is instructed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.  Raza was instructed in the successful extradition defence of David Kezerashivili, former Defence Minister for Georgia, before the French Courts.  He appeared in the first successful judicial review challenge in the British Virgin Islands to the refusal of a work permit (Citco and Gillespie). He successfully challenged a refusal of permanent residence in the Cayman Islands by the owner of the largest hotel chain in Europe.

Rory Kennedy

One of the nation’s most prolific documentary filmmakers, Academy Award-nominated, Primetime Emmy Award-winning Director/Producer, Rory Kennedy tackles some of the world’s most pressing social concerns including poverty, political corruption, domestic abuse, drug addiction, human rights, mental illness and climate crises in more than 30 highly acclaimed documentaries that have appeared on Netflix, HBO, PBS, Lifetime Television, A&E, Court TV, NatGeo,The Oxygen Network and TLC.


In addition to Rory’s impressive body of film work, she directs commercial projects that address similar social issues, such as “The Evolution of Barbie” for Mattel, a behind-the-scenes spot looking at the inspiration and creation of the new Barbie dolls that break the standard mold. Docu Without a Net: The Digital Divide in America, for Verizon, resulted in national spots for their #humanability campaign featuring Verizon’s Innovative Learning program.


Rory’s latest films include The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari, which celebrates the survivors in its gripping account of the tragic eruption and heroic rescue, reaching Netflix’s Top 10 Most Watched lists including #1 US and #2 globally following its December release, and the damning investigative docu, Downfall: The Case Against Boeing, also for Netflix. Rory’s documentary Above and Beyond: NASA’s Journey to Tomorrow, for the Discovery Channel, is a spotlight on how NASA has impacted our world not just from exploring space and the universe, but also our own planet, celebrating the institution’s many accomplishments on its 60th Anniversary and reaching forward to the future.

Judy Korin

Producer

ADRIFT

Judy Korin fuses her backgrounds in graphic design and filmmaking to contribute to visually powerful and socially impactful works. Her credits include Rebel Hearts (2021), The Great Hack (2019) the Sundance-supported documentary Bending the Arc (Sundance premiere 2017, as co-producer), the TBS documentary series A Century of Women (1993, as director; IDA and Emmy Award nominee), the micro-budget indie scripted feature film Finding Neighbor (2015, producer), and the documentary short Break the World (2018, director).


Judy started her career in the early days of motion graphics as a designer / animator, garnering three Emmy nominations for her main title designs. She is founder / creative director of Seesaw Studios, a creative boutique through which she has produced and directed many short-form documentaries and branded content films for television and commercial clients, as well as social-justice and educational nonprofits such as the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Community Action Network, and Students Run LA.


Judy holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MFA in Cinema-Television from USC, and in 2017 was chosen to be an associate of the Berkeley Investigative Reporting Program for documentary filmmakers. She teaches filmmaking at Otis College of Art and Design, with the New York Film Academy, and with low-income high-school students at Venice Arts.

Edafe Okporo

Author and Activist

Edafe Okporo is the author of the compelling book "ASYLUM: A Memoir and Manifesto," and founder of Refuge America. He brings a deep personal commitment to his work with refugees. Born in Nigeria, Edafe faced the harsh reality of persecution and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals in his homeland. Seeking safety and freedom, he sought refuge in the United States, where he has become a passionate advocate for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and refugees. Edafe's personal experiences as a refugee and his unwavering commitment to equality and justice have made him a prominent voice in the fight for a more inclusive and compassionate world. Through his writing and activism, he continues to inspire and drive positive change.


With a bachelor's degree from Enugu State University and a master's degree in HR Management from NYU, Edafe is an accomplished Inclusion and Diversity, Talent & Organization, and Change Transformation Leader. Based in New York City, he also works as a Talent and Organization Consultant.

Leah Zamore

Associate Director, Humanitarian Policy

NYC Center on International Cooperation

Leah Zamore is the Associate Director, Humanitarian Policy at the NYU Center on International Cooperation. She also co-directs an Experts Group on Global Refugee Policy; is the co-author, with Alex Aleinikoff, of The Arc of Protection: Reforming the International Refugee Regime (Stanford University Press, 2019); serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Asylum Access, a global refugee rights NGO; and teaches on migration and human rights at The New School.


Prior to her current positions, Ms. Zamore taught international human rights law at Fundação Getúlio Vargas law school in São Paulo, Brazil; served as a special advisor to the federal Government in Brasilia on refugee and humanitarian issues; and, before that, worked as a policy adviser to the Deputy High Commissioner of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Geneva, Switzerland. In previous years, her human rights and humanitarian work has taken her to Ethiopia, northern Uganda, South Africa, France, Kosovo, and India.


Ms. Zamore has a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School, a Master’s degree from Oxford University, and a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University.

Alexandra Délano Alonso

Associate Professor of Anthropology

The New School

Alexandra Délano Alonso is Associate Professor and Chair of Global Studies at The New School and the current holder of the Eugene M. Lang Professorship for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring. She received her doctorate in International Relations from the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on diaspora policies, the transnational relationships between states and migrants, migration in the Central America-Mexico-US corridor, sanctuary, and the politics of memory in relation to borders, violence and migration. Her work is driven by a concern with the inequalities underlying forced migration, the structures that lead to the marginalization of undocumented migrants in the public sphere, and the practices of resistance and solidarity focused on migrants' access to rights, from a transnational perspective.

 

Professor Délano Alonso's current research focuses on transformative practices of solidarity across the Central America-Mexico-US migration corridor.

Samuel Moyn

Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and History

Yale University

Samuel Moyn is Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and History at Yale University.

He received a doctorate in modern European history from the University of California-Berkeley in 2000 and a law degree from Harvard University in 2001. He came to Yale from Harvard University, where he was Jeremiah Smith, Jr. Professor of Law and Professor of History. Before this, he spent thirteen years in the Columbia University history department, where he was most recently James Bryce Professor of European Legal History.


His areas of interest in legal scholarship include international law, human rights, the law of war, and legal thought, in both historical and current perspective. In intellectual history, he has worked on a diverse range of subjects, especially twentieth-century European moral and political theory.

Sana Mustafa

Chief Executive office

Asylum Access

Sana Ali Mustafa is a movement leader in the forced displacement sector and a feminist human rights activist fighting against systems of oppression in Syria and around the world. Sana’s work has been informed by her experiences as a brown, queer, Arab, and forcibly displaced woman. After being forcibly displaced by the Assad regime, Sana led the establishment of global efforts for the representation and inclusion of forcibly displaced persons, such as the Global Refugee-led Network. Sana is currently Chief Executive Officer of Asylum Access, where she leads the organization’s work to dismantle decades of colonialism, fight for self-representation, and build intersectional coalitions to demand human rights for all forcibly displaced people.


Prior to joining Asylum Access, Sana managed her own consulting business where she helped over a dozen public and private sector organizations such as Oxfam International, Open Society Foundations, United Nations, WeWork, and others to establish strategies to operate more equitably in support of refugee rights and refugee leadership.
